Columbia Southcarolina

Columbia, South Carolina and Roadside America

It is time for a break. Over the last two weeks, I have been spending long days and early mornings preparing for my mobilization at Camp McCrady training center, located outside of Columbia, South Carolina. Camp McCrady is an extension of Fort Jackson.

Military training provides the structure and repetition necessary to be prepared for the mission, but my creative beast was yearning for new sights and sounds, something wild and wacky.
Roadside American.com provided solutions for an obscure and interesting travel itinerary to fill my ache for the new and unusual, and most often the sights are usually free.

Our first stop was at the World's Largest Fire Hydrant, stands thirty nine and weights almost five ton. You can kill two birds with one stone by also visiting the very realist Tunnel Vision mural directly behind the fire hydrant. A great twist to the mural is that it is lit up at night, so it would make for interesting day and night pictures. I thought about posting the picture of the mural and asking readers to guess what city the tunnel is in. Do you think some people would be fooled and not realize it is a mural? Part of the fascination with the mural is its realism because it has been touted for the bullet holes in the Yield sign

South Carolina Gamecocks mascot statue, in the middle of town. South Carolinans are very loyal football fans. Streets and taverns were roaring on Saturday night as the Gamecocks creamed their opponents.
